How CAR-T Therapy Works

The journey from a routine blood draw to a personalized cellular infusion — staged and monitored by a specialized team.

The Five Stages of CAR-T

While the science is advanced, the patient experience follows a clear, well-established sequence.

1

Collect — Apheresis

White blood cells are separated from a sample of the patient's blood through apheresis, a few-hour outpatient procedure. The collected T cells become the raw material for the therapy.

2

Engineer & Expand

In a certified cell-processing facility, the T cells receive the CAR gene (usually via a viral vector) and are grown into hundreds of millions of cancer-seeking cells. This takes a few weeks.

3

Lymphodepletion

Just before infusion, a short course of low-dose chemotherapy clears space in the body so the new CAR-T cells can expand effectively once infused.

4

Infusion

The engineered CAR-T cells are given back through an intravenous line — much like a blood transfusion. It is usually a single dose.

5

Monitor & Respond

Patients stay in the hospital for close observation. The team watches for CRS and ICANS and treats them promptly with established protocols.

🎉

Response & Follow-up

Response is assessed over the following weeks and months. Many patients enter deep remission; long-term follow-up tracks the persisted CAR-T cells.

How Long Does the CAR-T Process Take?

Timelines vary by product and hospital, but a typical autologous CAR-T journey looks like this.

From Collection to Infusion

The manufacturing "vein-to-vein" time — from apheresis to infusion — is typically around 2 to 4 weeks. During this window the patient is usually managed with bridging therapy if needed, then receives lymphodepletion and infusion.

Total time in China including evaluation, the infusion and the required monitoring stay is commonly several weeks. Our coordinators build a full timeline with you before you travel.
